People have to migrate for various reason such war, armed conflict, economic deprivation, and climate induced disasters. Leaving one’s home and community is a difficult decision. Unfortunately, millions of people have to make this tough decision in order to find a better life for themselves and their families. Millions decide to take a perilous journey to seek refuge and search for new place to call home. Unfortunately for many, the grim reality is that they will experience homelessness. Refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers lack access to safe and dignified housing, especially in Greece. Thousands are placed in small, dingy, unsanitary, and cramped tents and containers in camps — and these people are considered the lucky ones because they at least have a stable roof over their heads. Some refugees, and asylum seekers even form informal camps outside official refugee camps in hopes of receiving some sort of housing. Others are forced to live and sleep in public parks, streets, or move house to house every time someone offers to host them. Lack of stable housing places displaced people in a precarious situation often making them vulnerable to exploitation. These circumstances are especially dangerous for homeless refugee women who often face sexual violence and assault.

The suffering of these homeless refugees is unseen and unheard, but walking around the streets of Athens you can see it ever-present. And now the government’s policies are putting more and more people out onto the streets. Finding Refuge is one of the few organization providing housing refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers in Athens. We are one of the first organizations to start a goal focused community-led housing center called Duniya House. At Duniya House we provide holistic support including asylum case-working support, emergency needs assistance, education, translation services, and community building activities. We are trying to do our best to ensure that residents of Duniya House develop a strong foundation to achieve their goals and transition to their permanent home, but we need your support to continue our work.

Your donation can ensure that we can continue providing housing to the refugees that have called Duniya House their home and expand our programs to support even more people!
